The Origin and Growth of Ebenezer Gospel Assembly:
Ebenezer, meaning “Stone of Help,” distinctly symbolized God’s guiding hand in this ministry’s inception. Established in 1964 in Stamford, Connecticut, Pastor Edgar Lashley, alongside Rev. James Ferguson, tirelessly sought a church that would align with Lashley’s divine vision.
Divine Direction to Bridgeport:
Upon facing numerous challenges, a divine voice intriguingly directed Lashley back to Bridgeport. Here, although the initially identified church deviated from his vision, Deacon David Johnson’s timely suggestion led to a serendipitous discovery. By January 1965, under the blessings of the Late Bishop Roderick Caesar, the church proudly stood as the Ebenezer Gospel Assembly.
Early Days and Divine Assistance:
Starting with merely four members and modest funds, it was nothing short of a miracle when their savings exactly matched the church’s furnishing expenses, reinforcing Lashley’s unwavering belief in divine interventions.
Building on Faith:
EGA, firmly rooted in profound faith, flourished as Pastor Lashley, supported by devout prayer warriors like Sister Catlin and Sister Smith, alongside diligent workers, laid its foundational bricks. Remarkably, the church’s exponential growth also owed much to its charter members and a youth choir, which became renowned for its spirited and soulful singing.
Legacy of Love and Learning:
A deep love for God and souls became EGA’s hallmark. Reverend Lashley’s passion for scripture gave rise to the Extension School of the Bethel Bible Institute, which later evolved into the Foundation Bible Institute. Moreover, Mother Lashley’s tireless efforts championed missions, and her exemplary life became a shining beacon of a virtuous womanhood.
Facing Challenges and Embracing Change:
In 1991, a sudden health crisis struck Reverend Lashley, leading to a bleak prognosis. Yet, through collective prayers and divine intervention, he made a miraculous recovery, rightfully earning the title “The Miracle Man.” Subsequently, his retirement to Barbados opened a new chapter where he continued his spiritual endeavors with renewed zest.
Transition and Expansion under Reverend Thomas Hayes:
By 1995, Reverend Thomas W. Hayes, inspired by his predecessor, took the reins and navigated EGA with renewed vigor. Embracing change, the church expanded its outreach, addressing pressing societal challenges and placing an enhanced emphasis on the five-fold ministry. Additionally, Reverend Hayes’ leadership roles outside EGA underscored his commitment to serving the marginalized.
A New Era with Pastor J. Patrick Hayes:
After over 27 years of service, Pastor Thomas Hayes gracefully stepped down in 2021, passing the baton to our New Senior Pastor, Elder J. Patrick Hayes. Read more About Our Pastor here. The church, firmly rooted as a “Stone of Help,” continues to shine brightly, with Jesus as its Chief Cornerstone.
